Rumors have long circulated that Apple plans to launch its first foldable iPhone in 2026, and according to information obtained by Bloomberg, the company intends to reintroduce the Touch ID fingerprint recognition system with this device. Meanwhile, the 20th-anniversary iPhone, expected in 2027, will reportedly feature a distinctive wraparound glass body, with glass enveloping the chassis from every angle, enabling both information display and full-touch interaction.
Bloomberg notes that Apple originally considered using on-cell touch technology—where the touch layer is stacked atop the display layer—for its first foldable iPhone. Ultimately, however, the company opted for in-cell technology, which integrates the touch and display layers directly, as in current iPhones. This approach reduces panel thickness while minimizing unsightly creases along the fold.
In what may be a move to streamline internal design, Apple is expected to forgo Face ID in this foldable model, reverting instead to Touch ID. It remains unclear whether the fingerprint sensor will be embedded beneath the display or integrated into the power button, as seen in certain iPad models.
The foldable iPhone will reportedly be offered in black, white, light blue, and light gold, and equipped with a quad-lens rear camera system, though specific details are yet to be confirmed.
As for the 2027 anniversary edition, Apple is said to be abandoning the conventional glass-and-metal sandwich design in favor of a chassis fully enveloped in glass, capable of both displaying information and supporting touch-based interaction—an aesthetic aligned with Apple’s recently introduced “Liquid Glass” design language.
It is worth recalling that Apple’s 10th-anniversary iPhone X marked a major design shift by eliminating the physical Home button with Touch ID and introducing Face ID, which allowed for a nearly all-screen front display and popularized the now-iconic notch. That redesign reshaped not only Apple’s product line but also the broader smartphone market.
For the 20th-anniversary model, expectations are high that Apple will once again redefine smartphone design and set a new industry benchmark.
Until then, Apple is expected to first release the much-rumored foldable iPhone, while in the nearer term—this fall 2025—the company is anticipated to debut the iPhone 17 Air, a slim and lightweight model featuring the A19 processor, though likely limited to a single-lens main camera.
