According to information obtained by DigiTimes, Apple appears to have paused the development of its foldable iPad and is now redirecting more resources toward a foldable iPhone, suggesting that the latter may reach the consumer market sooner.
Originally, it was rumored that Apple intended to debut a foldable iPad first. However, the report indicates that internal evaluations highlighted significant challenges in achieving satisfactory yield rates for large foldable displays, coupled with elevated component costs that would inevitably push retail prices higher. Consequently, Apple is now considering launching a foldable iPhone ahead of the iPad variant and delaying the latter’s market release.
From both market demand and strategic perspectives, prioritizing a foldable iPhone aligns more closely with consumer expectations and accelerates Apple’s entry into the competitive foldable smartphone space—currently dominated by brands such as Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo.
Although the foldable tablet segment faces little competition, it also suffers from limited consumer attention. Despite the tablet market being relatively smaller in scale, it remains stable, with Apple maintaining a considerable competitive advantage. Therefore, releasing a foldable iPhone first would likely garner greater interest and media attention.
Should Apple proceed with the launch of a foldable iPhone next year, it would mark the company’s inaugural step into the foldable device market. This underscores the necessity of concentrating resources to ensure that the first product in this category meets Apple’s high standards for quality, user experience, and market reception—thus avoiding the pitfalls that have accompanied the initial rollout of other new product lines in the past.
