Speculation has long surrounded Apple’s potential acquisition of AI search engine provider Perplexity AI, but a new report suggests the company is also weighing the possibility of acquiring French AI startup Mistral AI.
A fresh analysis from The Information sheds light on Apple’s broader acquisition strategy in artificial intelligence. While Tim Cook recently signaled that Apple remains highly receptive to mergers and acquisitions that could accelerate its roadmap, the company has reportedly told financial institutions it intends to continue focusing on smaller-scale deals within the AI sector.
This discussion comes against the backdrop of Google’s ongoing antitrust trial over its dominance in search. U.S. regulators have demanded that Google stop paying partners to maintain its default search engine status. The most impacted party would be Apple, which currently receives around $20 billion annually from Google to keep Google Search as the default engine in Safari.
If the courts ultimately side with regulators and prohibit Google’s search agreements, Apple could face a substantial financial setback. In such a scenario, building its own search engine—or acquiring Perplexity AI—could provide a competitive counterweight to Google Search.
According to The Information, Apple executive Eddy Cue has been the most enthusiastic advocate for larger AI-related acquisitions. Cue previously supported potential purchases of Netflix and Tesla, both of which were ultimately vetoed by Tim Cook.
In contrast, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, has expressed skepticism toward such large-scale acquisitions. Reports suggest Federighi is hesitant about any major AI deals, convinced that Apple’s internal teams are capable of addressing the company’s AI shortcomings on their own.
The report also highlights Apple’s acquisition process, noting that the company generally refuses to overpay for any firm or team. While this disciplined approach limits financial risk, it also makes securing highly sought-after companies far more difficult.
Whether Apple will move forward with the acquisition of Perplexity AI or Mistral AI remains uncertain. With internal disagreements shaping strategy, Apple may ultimately decide against a purchase and instead double down on developing its own AI services in-house.
