As the scale of iPhone assembly and exports in India continues to expand year after year, Apple’s supply chain presence in the country has deepened significantly, driving vast employment opportunities across the region. According to recent international reports, since Apple first began assembling the iPhone SE in India in 2017, the company has forged partnerships with nearly 45 local enterprises, directly or indirectly creating around 350,000 jobs — approximately 120,000 of which are direct hires.
In recent years, amid escalating U.S.–China trade tensions and additional tariffs imposed on Chinese-manufactured goods, Apple has pursued an aggressive diversification strategy for its production lines, positioning India as one of its key manufacturing hubs. Beginning in the second quarter of this year, iPhones assembled in Indian factories have been exported to the U.S. on a large scale. Moreover, plans for the upcoming iPhone 17 series reportedly involve as many as five Indian facilities, marking the first time that the entire series could be fully assembled within India.
This strategy not only mitigates supply chain risks but also accelerates the modernization of India’s manufacturing sector. With major contract manufacturers such as Foxconn, Pegatron, and Wistron expanding their operations, component suppliers are following suit, fostering the growth of a more complete and self-sustaining industrial ecosystem.
Industry observers note that Apple’s collaboration with domestic component makers holds profound implications for India’s labor market, enabling greater localization of technology and production capacity while reducing reliance on imports.
For the Indian government, Apple’s continued investment represents a major economic boon. Long committed to attracting multinational technology firms through its Make in India initiative, India benefits not only from Apple’s influx of foreign capital but also from the resulting industrial advancement, skill development, and the strengthening of its position within the global manufacturing chain.
Nevertheless, India still faces challenges in infrastructure, supply chain reliability, and talent cultivation, and it will take time to match China’s highly mature manufacturing ecosystem. How Apple manages to maintain product quality while ensuring efficient output will be a key focus in the coming years.
Overall, Apple’s expansion in India has entered a new phase. What began as limited assembly of entry-level models has evolved into full-scale participation in the production of flagship iPhones — solidifying India as an indispensable pillar of Apple’s global supply chain.
Yet beyond the sheer increase in export volume lies a deeper transformation — the creation of hundreds of thousands of jobs and the catalyst for industrial and technological renewal. Apple’s supply chain strategy, therefore, is not merely a matter of corporate competition; it is a force reshaping the global landscape of manufacturing itself.
