Broadcom has announced a strategic partnership with the AI startup CAMB.AI to jointly develop an entirely new AI chipset. The defining feature of this chip lies in its ability to perform real-time audio translation, dubbing, and audio description tasks entirely on-device, eliminating the need for any cloud connectivity.
Both Broadcom and CAMB.AI emphasized that by processing all data locally, this solution will deliver an ultra-low-latency experience, significantly enhance content privacy, and greatly reduce dependence on wireless bandwidth resources.
Another highlight of the collaboration is its audio description capability. In an official demo video featuring a clip from Pixar’s Ratatouille, the AI not only provided instant dialogue translation, but also generated spoken descriptions of on-screen actions—such as “a rat scurrying across the kitchen”—and rendered them in multiple languages. This feature holds immense potential value for users with visual impairments.
However, reports have cautioned that the demonstration footage was highly curated and edited, meaning that the technology’s real-world performance and accuracy remain to be proven.
Despite these caveats, CAMB.AI’s voice modeling technology has already been adopted by organizations such as NASCAR, Comcast, and the Eurovision Song Contest.
The two companies claim that the new chip will eventually support on-device translation in more than 150 languages.
As for the commercial rollout of televisions or other devices equipped with this chipset, Broadcom noted that the technology is still in the testing phase, and it will take additional time before it reaches consumer products.
This collaboration marks Broadcom’s latest strategic expansion in the field of artificial intelligence, following its recent announcement of a partnership with OpenAI to assist in the manufacturing of OpenAI’s custom AI chips.
