Capcom Confirms Unauthorized Access

Japanese game maker Capcom has confirmed unauthorized access to its CAPCOM ID membership system. The breach involves 11.77 million user records worldwide.

CAPCOM ID is the credential that users need to reach Capcom’s online services and some of its games. The exposed data includes email addresses and account activity details. For a small number of accounts, it also includes birthdays and gender.

What Data Was Exposed

Capcom’s early findings show that the accessed records mainly contain account activity data:

  • Account creation time.
  • Most recent login time.
  • Number of logins.
  • The client IP address of the last login.

A further 43 records include birthdays, gender, country or region, and nicknames.

Passwords and Payment Data

The attacker changed the login passwords of 196 accounts. Capcom has already reset the passwords on those accounts. However, it has not yet confirmed whether passwords that users set themselves leaked. Concerned users can reset their passwords on their own.

Capcom stresses that payment details, such as linked credit cards, were not exposed.

Incident Timeline

  • October 19: Capcom spotted suspicious activity and confirmed unauthorized access the same day. Its security team then began blocking the intruder.
  • October 20: Capcom confirmed that the attacker had obtained some user data.
  • October 21: Capcom reported the incident to law enforcement and to Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commission.

What Users Should Expect

CAPCOM ID services and games still work normally. Capcom will contact affected users by email, in batches.

The company also warns users to watch for impersonation. Scammers may pose as Capcom and ask for account passwords, send people to phishing sites, or attempt other malicious activity. Therefore, users should treat unexpected messages with care, and they should reset their passwords if they have any doubt.
