As AI tools become increasingly integrated into daily workflows, OpenAI is reportedly poised to bolster ChatGPT’s business utility—setting its sights directly on the Microsoft Office user base. According to a report from The Information, OpenAI is developing a new “Agent” feature that would enable ChatGPT to directly edit spreadsheet-like Excel files and PowerPoint-style presentations within the chat interface, crafting a productivity experience independent of Microsoft Office.
This new feature is designed to allow users not only to pose questions and generate content within ChatGPT but also to manipulate spreadsheets and presentations directly—minimizing the friction of switching between multiple platforms. Trial users noted that OpenAI has introduced shortcut buttons beneath the input box, enabling one-click document creation for a more intuitive and seamless experience.
Since Excel and PowerPoint file formats are based on open standards, OpenAI can develop this functionality without needing Microsoft’s authorization—ensuring compatibility with mainstream formats. This means users can create, open, and save compatible documents via ChatGPT without installing Microsoft Office, significantly enhancing consistency in AI-assisted writing and productivity tasks.
Beyond basic document editing, the new Agent feature also possesses data retrieval and task execution capabilities. It can, for example, automatically generate reports based on internal company data or publicly available information, and even assist in complex tasks such as website design. These capabilities build upon ChatGPT’s existing Deep Research and Operator features, but future versions are expected to offer enhanced interactivity, including support for web navigation, automated data completion, and bypassing website restrictions—further elevating the Agent’s practical utility and autonomous performance in professional workflows.
Additionally, The Financial Times reports that OpenAI is planning to integrate a payment system into ChatGPT, allowing users to complete financial transactions within the service, with OpenAI collecting a commission as an added revenue stream. This strategic move, extending beyond the financial sector, not only strengthens ChatGPT’s positioning as a commercial tool but also accelerates the evolution of AI utilities into a “platform-as-workspace” paradigm.
