Codex CLI is a terminal-based programming and development tool launched by OpenAI. Originally, it required manual configuration of the OpenAI API before use—meaning developers had to pay additional API fees to work with it.
Following the release of GPT-5, OpenAI added a “Sign in with ChatGPT” option to Codex CLI, allowing users to log in directly with their ChatGPT account—no API configuration required, and no extra fees incurred.
Direct login and usage of Codex CLI are currently available to ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Pro, and ChatGPT Team subscribers, while ChatGPT Enterprise users will need to wait for a future rollout.
The key improvement is not merely ChatGPT login integration, but the ability for developers to leverage the usage quota of their ChatGPT paid subscription. For example, ChatGPT Pro offers a higher quota, which can be used for project development—reducing unnecessary API costs.
According to OpenAI’s announcement, ChatGPT paid subscribers who reach their usage quota will be downgraded to the GPT-5-mini model. It is not yet confirmed whether Codex CLI will also downgrade to the mini model to allow continued unlimited use. OpenAI stated it will observe developer usage over the coming weeks before deciding on potential adjustments—essentially to see how many tokens developers consume before finalizing the plan.
In addition, signing in via ChatGPT provides direct access to the GPT-5 model. OpenAI has also launched the GPT-5 API, and Codex CLI retains the option to connect via API—meaning developers without a ChatGPT paid subscription can still use the tool through API calls.
