
Google has announced funding support for the electrical training ALLIANCE (etA) — a joint initiative of the National Electrical Contractors Association and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers — with the aim of training 100,000 electricians and 30,000 new apprentices across the United States. This initiative seeks to address the surging demand for electricity driven by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence technologies.
In its latest white paper, Powering the New Era of American Innovation, Google emphasizes that AI is poised to unlock immense economic opportunities. However, the advancement of AI hinges on a robust and highly efficient power grid capable of sustaining the data centers required for its training and execution.
Data presented in the white paper projects that newly constructed data centers by 2030 may require an additional 15 to 90 gigawatts of electricity. To meet this demand, the paper advocates for investment in alternative energy sources, including nuclear power, and underscores the urgent need to expand the electrical workforce.
Google further cites statistics from McKinsey & Company, which estimate that by 2030, the construction of data centers and supporting infrastructure will necessitate 130,000 additional electricians. However, the current rate of retirements in the profession already outpaces the number of newly trained electricians. Approximately 10,000 electricians in the U.S. retire or leave the trade each year, while only about 7,000 new entrants join annually — pointing to an impending labor shortage.
In addition to investing in workforce development, Google continues to fund a variety of alternative energy initiatives, including geothermal, tidal, and solar power. The company is also leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance energy efficiency, striving to meet the escalating electricity demands driven by AI at scale.
