Developer JPRX recently released the open-source Darwin-VM project, a modified QEMU virtualization scheme that boots genuine iOS and macOS systems while simulating multiple generations of Apple processors. Users must understand that this virtual machine specifically targets niche research areas. It primarily serves XNU kernel exploration, security analysis, and reverse engineering studies. It does not function as a standard application emulator. Therefore, general consumers have absolutely no need to deploy this system.
Broad Support for Apple Silicon
This open-source project officially supports A14 through A19 chips. These powerful processors drive the iPhone 12 through iPhone 17 models. Regarding macOS, the project successfully covers M1 through M5 chips. Developers also thoroughly tested machine profiles like the Mac mini and MacBook Air.
Upon booting, the system skips the graphical desktop interface entirely. Instead, it drops directly into a streamlined Darwin Root Shell environment. Here, researchers can directly edit the core root file system. They can compile and execute custom applications effortlessly. Additionally, Darwin-VM does not strictly require an ARM architecture host. Therefore, researchers can comfortably run the project on standard x86 devices. However, extracting necessary tools from official IPSW files still requires temporary Mac assistance. Afterward, users can easily transfer those specific files into the virtual machine.
