Meta has officially announced the launch of a native WhatsApp app for Apple Watch, marking a major upgrade to the WhatsApp experience on the device and addressing a long-standing limitation—previously, users could only rely on mirrored notifications from iPhone to send brief replies.
According to WhatsApp, the Apple Watch-native version introduces a range of key functional enhancements, enabling users to manage real-time communication without ever reaching for their iPhone:
- View full messages: In contrast to the previous mirrored notification system, which truncated lengthy messages, the new app allows users to read complete message content directly on their watch.
- Record and send voice messages: One of the most significant upgrades — users can now record and send voice messages directly from the Apple Watch.
- Quick emoji reactions: Instantly respond to messages with emoji reactions for faster, more expressive replies.
- Enhanced call notifications: View detailed information about incoming callers right on the watch before deciding whether to answer.
- Image and sticker support: Browse high-quality images and stickers seamlessly on the device.
- Extended chat history: Access a longer portion of past messages than ever before.
Additionally, WhatsApp emphasizes that all messages and calls remain protected by end-to-end encryption, even on Apple Watch.
This update represents a significant milestone for Apple Watch users. Until now, the WhatsApp experience on the platform had been extremely limited—dependent on iPhone notifications, without the ability to initiate chats or view full conversations.
To use the new native app, users must have an Apple Watch Series 4 or later, running watchOS 10 or higher.
A similar pattern can be seen with Instagram, another Meta-owned service, which took years before finally introducing an iPad-native app — underscoring Meta’s historically cautious approach toward native development on Apple platforms beyond the iPhone.
