Google has announced that on October 1, 2025 (U.S. local time), it will host a special event dedicated to Google Home, during which it will unveil the integration of Gemini into Google Home, signaling a new era of AI-driven smart home experiences.
When the Pixel 10 series was revealed earlier, Google simultaneously introduced its next-generation smart home assistant service, Gemini for Home, scheduled to launch in October 2025 through an Early Access program for smart displays and speakers. Over time, Gemini will gradually replace the existing Google Assistant.
Notably, Gemini for Home will feature both free and paid tiers, underscoring Google’s strategy to expand its subscription ecosystem through AI-powered smart home services—an approach reminiscent of Amazon’s Alexa+ initiative.
According to Google, Gemini for Home will provide a fully integrated experience with Gemini Live, enabling more personalized and context-aware interactions. For example, when a user inquires about the weather or an upcoming appointment, Gemini will reference data from the calendar, emails, and real-time sensors to deliver richer, more situationally relevant responses.
Leveraging its multimodal understanding, Gemini can also process inputs from other Nest devices—such as security camera feeds—to handle more complex queries or offer timely recommendations.
From teaser images released by Google, the new Nest Cam appears visually similar to its predecessor, though speculation suggests it will feature 2K resolution. Reports also indicate that an upgraded Nest Doorbell with improved imaging and detection capabilities may be announced.
Adding intrigue, a previously unseen Nest audio device briefly appeared during Google’s last product launch livestream. Industry observers suspect this may serve as the hardware hub for Gemini for Home, acting as the central node that bridges smart home devices with AI capabilities—potentially through a new-generation smart speaker.
For years, Google’s smart home strategy has largely centered on voice commands and monitoring. With Gemini, the company aims to transform the smart home into a proactive digital companion, capable of learning, anticipating, and responding to household needs in a more natural and intuitive way.
If the October rollout proceeds as expected, Google’s smart home strategy will enter a new phase—combining Gemini’s advanced AI-driven software experiences with upgraded Nest hardware. This evolution will not only challenge Amazon’s Alexa+ and Apple’s HomeKit, but could also redefine the very threshold of smart home usability.
