Following the unveiling of the Pixel 10 series, alongside the Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Buds 2a, Google has officially introduced its next-generation smart home assistant service, Gemini for Home. Scheduled to launch in October 2025 through Early Access on smart displays and speakers, the service is set to gradually replace the existing Google Assistant.
Notably, Gemini for Home will be offered in both free and paid tiers, underscoring Google’s ambition to expand its subscription-based ecosystem within the smart home domain—an approach that mirrors Amazon’s strategy with its Alexa+ service.
First showcased at CES 2025, Gemini was highlighted as a breakthrough in reducing the rigidity of human–machine interaction. By harnessing the power of generative AI, Google emphasized that users would be able to accomplish tasks through natural conversation, no longer bound by rigid, pre-defined voice commands.
With its multimodal understanding, Gemini can also integrate input from other Nest devices—such as pulling live feeds from security cameras—to provide richer answers to complex queries or deliver contextually aware, real-time recommendations.
When it becomes available in October via Early Access, Google promises Gemini for Home will fully deliver these experiences, further enhanced by Gemini Live for more personalized interactions. For instance, when asked about the weather or an upcoming schedule, Gemini could simultaneously reference a user’s calendar, emails, and real-time sensor data to craft more situationally relevant responses.
Although Google has confirmed the existence of free and premium versions, it has yet to disclose pricing details or feature distinctions. During CES, the company hinted that subscribers of the Nest Aware service (currently priced at $10 per month) would be among the first to gain access. This has fueled speculation that Gemini for Home’s premium offering may be bundled with Nest Aware, or alternatively, introduced as a standalone add-on.
The introduction of paid subscription models within digital assistant services not only signals Google’s pivot toward an AI-centric subscription strategy in its smart home business but also highlights the company’s intention to secure new revenue streams beyond hardware sales.
At present, Google has outlined only the service roadmap for Gemini for Home, without revealing any related hardware updates. Given that the Nest Hub series has not seen a refresh since 2021, industry observers widely expect Google to unveil new smart displays or speakers alongside the launch, ensuring the hardware is capable of fully harnessing the benefits of multimodal AI.
With the Pixel 10 series powered by the Tensor G5 processor optimized for AI workloads, the Pixel Watch 4 introducing an AI health coach, and the Pixel Buds 2a integrating Gemini Live, Google is steadily weaving generative AI across smartphones, wearables, and smart home devices—building a cohesive ecosystem with Gemini at its core.
Ultimately, the debut of Gemini for Home symbolizes not only Google’s ambition to redefine the smart home experience but also its intent to position AI subscriptions as a central pillar of future revenue growth.
