Amid the intensifying race in generative AI, Meta is not only investing heavily to recruit top technical talent but also appears open to temporarily leveraging the technologies of its rivals.
According to a report from The Information, Meta’s newly established Superintelligence Lab is evaluating whether to integrate Google Gemini or OpenAI’s models into its Meta AI chatbot and other application services, with the goal of enhancing conversational quality and text-based search.
A Meta spokesperson responded that the company is pursuing an “all-of-the-above strategy,” advancing its own Llama models while also engaging in external collaborations and exploring a variety of AI solutions. If outside models are adopted, they would serve only as a temporary measure, with the ultimate objective being the acceleration of Llama’s evolution to maintain long-term competitiveness.
The report further noted that Meta engineers already have access to Anthropic’s models to aid in software development. At the same time, to fortify its technical foundation, Meta is offering highly competitive compensation packages in an effort to lure AI researchers away from Google and OpenAI, thereby expanding the scale and expertise of its Superintelligence Lab.
In essence, Meta’s AI strategy is not confined to a single in-house technology but is instead built on flexible integration and parallel advancement — improving its application ecosystem in the short term while simultaneously amassing training data and practical use cases to strengthen its own models, all while competing head-to-head with Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic.
