Google has begun introducing deeper Gemini model integration into its Google Translate service. In the latest version of the app, a new translation model option allows users to choose between the standard “Fast” mode and the Gemini-powered “Advanced” mode, catering to different usage needs.
According to Google, the existing Fast mode will retain its hallmark speed and efficiency, making it ideal for situations that demand immediate results. Switching to Advanced mode, however, will engage Gemini AI, which “focuses on precision.”
This means that translations in Advanced mode may take slightly longer to process, but they will deliver greater accuracy and contextual fluency. Reports note that the translation quality achieved in this mode is already comparable to that of users directly employing Gemini for translation tasks.
While the involvement of a large language model (LLM) ensures smoother and more natural translations, users are cautioned about potential AI hallucinations that could introduce inaccuracies or misleading content.
At present, Google admits that the Gemini-powered Advanced mode supports only a limited number of languages during its initial rollout and has yet to disclose the full list. The company plans to gradually expand language support, aiming to offer users a balance between translation speed and linguistic precision.
