Following Amazon’s unveiling of several new Echo smart speakers and the expansion of its Alexa+ service, Google in October formally introduced a sweeping update to its smart home ecosystem. The company announced that the long-standing Google Assistant will be fully replaced by the new Gemini for Home service. Alongside this shift, Google also launched a redesigned Google Home app, a new generation of smart speakers, and upgraded Nest-branded cameras and doorbells — all deeply integrated with Gemini’s AI capabilities to reimagine the smart home experience.
The era in which users had to rely on rigid, precise commands for Google Assistant is now ending. With Gemini for Home, Google emphasizes that the system can understand contextual meaning. For example, if a user says, “I want to watch a movie, turn off the lights,” Gemini will automatically infer the intent, dimming the living room lights. It also supports chaining multiple requests together and allows users to create automated routines in natural language — no longer requiring manual configuration through the Google Home app.
Through Gemini Live, users can engage in continuous conversations with the AI without needing the “Hey Google” wake phrase. Camera devices have also been enhanced with semantic analysis, enabling them to interpret events in real time. With the new Ask Home feature, users can receive answers to contextual questions such as, “Did I forget to close the car door?”
Another new addition, Home Brief, can compress hours of surveillance footage into concise highlights, giving homeowners a quick snapshot of household activity and alerting them to potential anomalies.
These advanced features, however, will be tied to the Google Home Premium subscription, priced at $10 per month. Beyond AI-powered functions, the plan includes 30 days of cloud video storage and seamless integration with Google AI Pro and Ultra subscription tiers.
Coinciding with Gemini for Home, the Google Home app has undergone a major redesign. The updated version introduces three new sections — Home, Activity, and Automation — and places a permanent Ask Home AI entry point at the top, allowing users to control the entire home ecosystem using natural language. Google highlights not only improved usability but also significant performance gains: app load times are 70% faster, camera streams open 30% quicker, playback failures have been reduced by 40%, and overall crash rates have dropped by nearly 80%. Power consumption has also been optimized for Android devices.
On the hardware front, Google confirmed that in Spring 2026 it will release a new Google Home smart speaker at a suggested retail price of $99. Powered by Gemini, the speaker offers more natural conversational interaction, supports 360-degree audio, and can be paired with Google TV for immersive surround sound. Available in four finishes — Porcelain White, Hazel, Jade, and Berry Red — the device also features a physical microphone mute switch to address privacy concerns.
Meanwhile, Google also introduced the next-generation Nest Doorbell and Nest Cam lineup. All models have been upgraded to 2K HDR resolution with wider fields of view, while low-light performance has improved by 120%, delivering extended full-color video capture. Enhanced by Gemini AI, the cameras support intelligent zoom, more precise notifications, and scenario-based summaries through Ask Home and Home Brief. Pricing will be set at $100 for the Nest Cam Indoor, $150 for the Nest Cam Outdoor, and $180 for the Nest Doorbell.
This wave of updates underscores Google’s determination to extend Gemini into everyday environments and stands as a direct response to Amazon’s Alexa+. By embedding semantic understanding and automated routines into the core of its ecosystem, Google signals that the future of the smart home is evolving toward experiences that are “more natural, more proactive.”
