Much like Apple’s Spotlight feature available on Mac devices, Microsoft has quietly introduced a new capability called “Command Palette,” which appears poised to replace the previously offered PowerToys Run — a quick-launch utility designed for advanced users.
The new Command Palette enables users to search across a wide array of applications, folder contents, and even specific documents within a Windows device. It also incorporates web search functionality, allowing users to look up online information without launching a browser, and to open web content directly from the search results.
Moreover, Microsoft allows users to pin frequently used applications to the Command Palette’s execution menu. For instance, users can search content directly from the Microsoft Store or via the Windows Package Manager (WinGet), creating a more intuitive experience for accessing specific search functionalities.
At present, the Command Palette can be swiftly summoned using the keyboard shortcut Windows key + Alt + Space, presenting a versatile interface with a range of actionable options. Users can also configure the Command Palette to perform system-level operations — such as launching particular settings or enabling and disabling features with a single keystroke.
