According to a report on The Information‘s website, OpenAI is actively adjusting its product strategy to withstand a powerful pincer from rivals in the field of the personal AI agent. The outlet reported that OpenAI is developing features to counter Grok Bot. Additionally, the company is mulling a response to Meta’s Muse.
Core Intelligence and Strategic Positioning
SpaceXAI launched Grok Bot in August this year, a digital assistant endowed with dedicated cloud-computing resources. It is able to log into users’ applications automatically and operate around the clock in the background. As a result, it can handle market research or in-app tasks. OpenAI is now developing corresponding enterprise-grade and productivity features to counter this model. In doing so, they hope to stem any loss of customers.
As for Meta’s Muse, the AI assistant unveiled in early September that boasts highly customizable avatars and deep integration with Meta’s social ecosystem. Furthermore, it quickly ascended to the top of the US free-app download chart after launch. OpenAI is also internally and actively discussing how to launch an entirely new personal-assistant product to answer Meta’s threat in the vast consumer market.
To accelerate the closing of this gap in agent technology, OpenAI has recently recruited Peter Steinberger, the creator of the open-source agent tool “OpenClaw” that went viral among AI power users this year. He is expected to lead OpenAI’s research and development of its “next-generation personal AI agent.” This is a near-term product tentatively called Codex Bot. Notably, Steinberger reportedly chose OpenAI over a competing bid from Meta.
Market Significance
As the major technology giants shift the battleground from “foundation-model compute” toward “personal agents that can integrate deeply into users’ daily lives,” the heart of this competition has transformed. Apple is preparing a major AI overhaul of Siri. Now, it has become a contest for users’ personal data and the entry point to their everyday operations.
The report further indicates that in this dual-front war of consumer-grade and enterprise-grade agents, OpenAI currently finds itself temporarily on the back foot, striving through new features and fresh talent to catch up. Rather than building entirely new systems from scratch, OpenAI is expected to repurpose and rebrand the agent capabilities already embedded within its ChatGPT and Codex platforms.
