At VMware Explore 2025, Broadcom announced that it has been selected as the strategic virtualization software solutions provider for Walmart, the worldβs largest retailer. At the heart of this partnership lies VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), which will serve as the core infrastructure enabling Walmart to modernize its technology stack across both private cloud and edge computing environments.
For years, Walmart has pursued a retail strategy defined by its guiding principle of being βpeople-led, tech-poweredβ, seamlessly integrating physical stores, e-commerce platforms, and online services to become a true omnichannel powerhouse. By adopting Broadcomβs VMware Cloud Foundation, Walmart signals its intent to further enhance its globally distributed cloud platforms, ensuring that every layerβfrom backend operations to front-end consumer experiencesβremains consistent, resilient, and reliable.
Broadcom emphasized that through the deployment of VCF, Walmart will achieve greater agility and scalability, streamline operations, and strengthen security defenses, while also reducing the time needed to roll out new innovations and services.
According to both companies, the introduction of VMware Cloud Foundation into Walmartβs infrastructure will deliver four core benefits:
- Agility and scalability β enabling the infrastructure to rapidly respond to shifting market demands while independently scaling compute and storage resources.
- Reduced operational complexity β consolidating software and system updates to ease hardware and management burdens, thereby improving overall efficiency.
- Simplified workload migration β allowing both virtual machines and containerized applications to benefit from policy-driven security and seamless cloud extensibility.
- Enhanced security and resilience β through automated patching, centralized governance, and immutable snapshot technology, ensuring faster recovery and minimizing risks of operational disruption.
Paul Turner, Vice President of Product for VMware Cloud Foundation at Broadcom, noted that Walmartβs selection of Broadcom as its strategic supplier is not only a validation of Broadcomβs software value but also a testament to the pivotal role VCF plays in global retail innovation. He further underscored that this private cloud infrastructure will not only enable Walmart to optimize resource management but also accelerate the deployment of innovative servicesβultimately elevating the omnichannel customer experience to new heights.
