Google has formally unveiled this month’s latest Pixel Drop feature update, crafted for Pixel devices. This upgrade spans phones and wearables. Beyond letting Pixel 6 and later models contact important people more intuitively, it further broadens the scope of system-level scam detection. At the same time, the Pixel Watch 5 smartwatch formally welcomes the Wear OS 7 upgrade, bringing an offline version of Gemini and richer one-handed gesture control. Google detailed everything in its September 2026 Pixel Drop announcement.
Staying Close to the People Who Matter: VIP Widgets and Instant Badges
For Pixel 6 and later models, Google has reoptimized the way users interact with their core social circle:
- Expanded VIP home-screen widget: Users can now place a more feature-rich dedicated widget on the home screen. Without tapping into a contact or messaging app, they can call or send a message to favorite or VIP contacts with a single tap, directly from the desktop.
- Recognize urgent notifications at a glance: The system adds a new notification-badge design, letting users, in the instant they glance at the screen, immediately discern whether there is an unread message from a VIP contact or an important notification bearing an urgent tag.
Scam Detection Steps Beyond SMS Into Third-Party Chat and Gboard
Facing the scam threats rampant across the globe, Google has comprehensively expanded the scam-detection mechanism originally built into Messages:
- Cross-app notification protection: In 10 markets, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Singapore, India, Germany, Mexico, Japan, and France, the scam-detection system now possesses cross-app monitoring. When the notification center receives a potentially suspicious or fraudulent message from various chat apps, the system proactively pops up a warning.
- Real-time Gboard alerts (US only): In the US market, Google has embedded its anti-scam capability deep into the input method. When users type or browse suspicious content in Gboard, the keyboard interface directly provides a scam warning.
Pixel Watch 5 Upgrades to Wear OS 7: Offline Gemini and One-Handed Double Pinch
On the smartwatch front, Google is pushing the Wear OS 7 system update to all Pixel Watch 5 devices. The core upgrades include:
- Personalized offline Gemini: The watch carries a Gemini assistant with more personalized context, and it supports performing basic computations and queries in an offline state without a network connection.
- More precise GPS positioning: Upgraded route-tracking algorithms improve GPS accuracy during exercise and navigation.
- A major upgrade to one-handed gesture control: Continuing the wrist-flip gesture for returning to the previous page, the new system greatly expands the applications of the double-pinch gesture. Users now need only double-pinch two fingers of one hand to summon the notification center on the watch face, scroll through Gemini’s replies, switch cards in Google Wallet, or switch between location reviews in Google Maps.

To accompany the update, users of Pixel 6 and later models can now download a new Harry Potter Audiobook theme pack, applying with a single tap a dedicated wallpaper, app icons, and system sounds that blend elements of the new audiobook edition.
At the same time, eligible Pixel users in designated regions, including the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, India, Japan, and Australia, can additionally enjoy a two-month free trial of the Audible audiobook platform.
