Google Takes On Tailored Scams With Gemini
Telecom fraud and social engineering attacks are spreading worldwide, and their scripts grow ever more personalized. In response, Google has announced new Android scam protections. The new anti-fraud and privacy tools run on Gemini AI.
The update brings real-time scam warnings in the notification shade, once exclusive to Pixel, to major Android phones, including models from leading Chinese makers. Google Messages also gains a hybrid defense that pairs Private AI Compute with on-device Gemini Nano.
Together, these tools cover a wide range of threats. They analyze conversation intent and scan malicious links in advance. They also mask screen sharing and block attacks that hijack bank calls through call forwarding.
A Dual-Engine AI Scam Shield
Traditional spam filters mostly rely on number blocklists or keywords such as “prize” or “transfer.” However, they often fail against scams that first build trust through casual chat.
Google’s new optional Scam Detection setting in Messages takes a different path. It uses a two-layer AI design that splits work between the cloud and the device.
Private AI Compute Reads Intent in the Cloud
To apply the most advanced Gemini models to complex, multi-turn conversations, Android sends suspicious messages to Private AI Compute. This isolated cloud space is protected by hardware encryption. As a result, no third party, not even Google itself, can access or read users’ messages.
Google shared an example. A scammer pretends to send a dog photo to the wrong number. The victim kindly replies, “You have the wrong number.” The scammer then chats on and asks for the victim’s name.
Gemini can spot this classic wrong-number trick, a disguised attempt to strike up a conversation and lure the victim in. It then shows a high-risk warning.
Gemini Nano Scans Links on the Device
For unknown links in a message, the system calls on the lightweight Gemini Nano model built into the phone. It checks the link before the user taps it, fully offline, so the data never leaves the device. Google has also redesigned the warning screen to give clearer context before a user proceeds.
The feature first supports the Google Pixel 10 series and newer. It also covers flagship phones with new-generation NPUs, such as the Samsung Galaxy S26 series, Galaxy Z Flip8, and Galaxy Fold 8.
Beyond Pixel: System-Wide Protections
Beyond the upgrades inside Google Messages, Google is extending its defenses to the core of Android and to hardware partners.
Scam Detection in Chat Notifications
- Rollout: Later this year, expanding to OPPO, Xiaomi, vivo, OnePlus, realme, Honor, and Motorola.
- How it helps: Users need not open the messaging app. The system analyzes chat notifications right in the notification shade and marks scam warnings. Thus, users avoid tapping phishing links after they enter a chat.
Automatic Screen-Sharing Privacy
- Rollout: Later this month, on all devices running Android 15 or newer.
- How it helps: Scammers often coax victims into sharing their screens during video calls. When a user shares the screen and opens Chrome or Android WebView, the system automatically hides passwords, banking details, and card security codes (CVV) by default.
Call Forwarding Protection
- Rollout: Early December, on Pixel and select Android phones.
- How it helps: It stops malicious apps from secretly turning on call forwarding in the background. Scammers may also trick victims into dialing special MMI codes, such as short strings like *21*, to hijack bank OTP voice codes. In those cases, the system blocks the code and shows a warning.
Bank Impersonation Check
- Rollout: Live in Brazil since June with local banks, where it has blocked more than 3 million fake calls. It will expand to more regions.
- How it helps: It verifies calls that claim to come from a bank through encrypted checks. If the caller fails verification through the bank’s official channel, Android hangs up automatically and alerts the user.
