Previously, Google introduced anti-theft protection for Android devices to strengthen security in cases of loss or theft. In regions such as Brazil, where robberies and theft are widespread, enabling this feature allows Android to trigger multiple defensive measures whenever suspicious activity is detected.
Currently, the supported safeguards include Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Device Lock. For instance, the Theft Detection Lock works as follows: if you are walking with your phone at a slow pace and it is suddenly snatched by a thief speeding away on a motorcycle, the sensors detect the abrupt change in movement and automatically activate a lock, preventing unauthorized access.
Until now, however, Google had excluded anti-theft settings from Android’s standard cloud backup. This meant that every time users reset their phones, they had to manually reconfigure these protections — a step that could easily be overlooked.
With the latest update to Google Play Services, anti-theft settings now support cloud backup. More precisely, the system saves the user’s configuration state. When a device is reset, Google restores these preferences, automatically enabling or disabling anti-theft protections according to the user’s prior setup.
This ensures that users are safeguarded even after a reset, without needing to reapply configurations themselves. At the very least, the device can lock itself automatically, reducing the risk of data leakage.
Another noteworthy feature is the Offline Device Lock. If a phone suddenly ceases all network activity and remains offline for an extended period, Google’s built-in AI interprets this as suspicious behavior. In response, it elevates the security level and automatically locks the device to prevent unauthorized access.
