After nearly eighteen years of operation in Russia, Sony, the Japanese multinational conglomerate, has formally announced its complete withdrawal from the Russian market, ceasing all direct services, including the closure of its local offices and the termination of customer support.
Sony had already begun scaling back its presence following the outbreak of the Russia–Ukraine war in 2022, halting shipments of its popular PlayStation consoles to Russia and shutting down the Russian version of the PlayStation Store.
However, fully closing a Russian subsidiary and exiting the market proved challenging. In 2023, Sony attempted to end its Russian operations but was blocked by local regulators, forcing the company to maintain its office while continuing its efforts to withdraw.
On October 10, 2024, Sony resubmitted the necessary closure documents to the Russian Federal Tax Service, triggering a lengthy bureaucratic review. Approval was only granted recently, paving the way for the company’s complete exit.
On August 11, 2025, Sony officially declared the total cessation of its business in Russia and the closure of its local subsidiary. In practice, Sony had already largely discontinued services in the country prior to this formal announcement.
For Russian consumers, the most immediate consequence will be the unavailability of official after-sales support for Sony gaming consoles. Future buyers may have to rely on third-party repair services in the event of hardware malfunctions.
