Apple offers a variety of cross-platform features within its ecosystem — for example, Safari tabs opened on one device can automatically appear on another, and the systemwide clipboard allows seamless copy-and-paste between Apple devices.
Within the Android ecosystem, however, Google has historically imposed stricter privacy controls on clipboard access. Beginning with Android 10, only the default keyboard or the currently active application is permitted to read clipboard content; other apps cannot access it directly and must rely on the user to paste manually.
In Android 13, Google tightened these restrictions even further: clipboard history is automatically cleared after one hour to prevent sensitive information from being harvested by other applications, and each clipboard access attempt triggers a system alert prompting the user to grant permission.
Because of these limitations, many users seeking clipboard synchronization have turned to Microsoft’s SwiftKey keyboard, which synchronizes clipboard content across devices — including Windows PCs — allowing Android clipboards to sync directly to Windows.
Now, Google appears to be preparing its own universal clipboard synchronization feature. According to information published by Android Authority, Google plans to allow clipboard syncing between Android devices, as well as between Android and Chromebooks, likely implemented through Google Play Services.
At this stage, only code references describing the feature have been uncovered, and both its final name and its implementation details remain uncertain. Recently, Google also introduced a new capability enabling Android’s Quick Share to interoperate with Apple’s AirDrop, making file transfers between Android and iOS significantly more convenient.
Given these developments, offering a cross-platform clipboard sync feature would hardly be surprising — indeed, it is a capability many users have long desired. While third-party apps already provide various forms of cross-device clipboard synchronization, native support from Google would naturally offer a far more seamless experience.
