In the trademark infringement case brought by celebrity video platform Cameo against OpenAI’s video-generation tool Sora, a U.S. federal court has issued an initial ruling in Cameo’s favor, granting a temporary restraining order that bars OpenAI from using the word “Cameo” within the Sora app. The order remains in effect until December 22.
According to a report from CNBC, the prohibition extends not only to the exact term “Cameo,” but also to similar-sounding or similarly spelled variants such as “Kameo” and “CameoVideo.”
The dispute centers on a feature within the Sora app that allows users to upload their likenesses for use—by themselves or others—in AI-generated videos. OpenAI named this feature “Cameo,” invoking the meaning of “guest appearance,” a choice that immediately drew objections from Cameo, the company renowned for its personalized celebrity video service.
Cameo filed suit in October, alleging that OpenAI’s naming choice risked consumer confusion and diluted its brand identity.
Reacting to the court’s decision, Cameo CEO Steven Galanis remarked, “We are encouraged by the court’s ruling, which recognizes the need to protect consumers from the confusion caused by OpenAI’s use of the Cameo mark.” He added that although the order is temporary, he hopes OpenAI will ultimately agree to cease using the term permanently.
An OpenAI spokesperson expressed dissatisfaction, stating, “We disagree with the assertion that anyone can claim exclusive ownership over the word ‘cameo.’” The company affirmed that it will continue to defend its position in court.
Judge Eumi K. Lee of the U.S. District Court, who issued the temporary restraining order, has scheduled a hearing for December 19 to determine whether the order should be made permanent. Until then, OpenAI must remove all use of the disputed term from the Sora app.
