The ChatGPT memory feature allows users to define specific preferences, enabling the AI model to retain those preferences and provide more tailored responses. For instance, users may predefine their background information, which the AI can reference when generating replies.
However, this memory capability comes with storage limitations. If too many entries are saved, users may encounter a “memory full” notification, requiring them to manually delete older memories to free up space and ensure that new data can be recorded properly.
To simplify this process, ChatGPT has introduced an automatic memory management feature for paid subscribers. Once enabled, this feature automatically deletes older memories based on chronological order, preventing the system from running out of available capacity.
With this addition, users no longer need to manually manage each memory entry. Nevertheless, they can still organize their memories manually — marking some as more important than others. Entries with lower priority will be deleted first, while those marked as higher priority will be retained for longer periods.
The automatic memory management feature is currently available exclusively to ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Pro subscribers. Starting today, these users will gradually receive access to the feature and can enable it directly in their memory settings.
