Since a month ago, users have been reporting abnormal crashes when launching Chrome—immediate crash alerts appear upon startup, followed by the browser process abruptly closing. This issue affects devices running Windows, Android, and macOS.
Most complaints center around crashes occurring at launch; however, some users have experienced sudden crashes while browsing, causing the entire browser to disappear without any error message.
A significant number of users have reported that Chrome frequently crashes during startup, with macOS users being the most severely affected.
Among the impacted platforms, macOS appears to suffer the most. The majority of complaints have come from users of Chrome for macOS, followed by those using the Android version. Crashes are comparatively less frequent on Windows, while the iOS version seems unaffected.
Chrome for iOS is built on a WebKit wrapper rather than the Chromium Blink engine. The fact that the iOS version remains unaffected suggests that the issue originates from Chrome itself. Other Chromium-based browsers, such as Microsoft Edge, have not exhibited similar behavior.
In the past week, reports of Chrome crashes or abrupt shutdowns have surged. Given Chrome’s massive user base, even an impact rate of 0.1% could affect millions of users, significantly disrupting their browsing experience.
As a temporary solution, users experiencing frequent Chrome crashes may consider switching to alternative browsers such as Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Vivaldi until Google resolves the issue.
Additionally, when Chrome crashes and is reopened, a prompt typically appears, offering to restore previously opened pages. If the prompt does not appear, users can manually recover their sessions using Ctrl+Shift+T (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+T (macOS). However, any unsaved data, such as text entered in input fields, will be lost.
