Some macOS users have recently found that extensions installed in Google Chrome load extremely slowly. Clicking an extension icon in the toolbar causes it to hang, and the resulting popup window may take several minutes to load and respond. Affected extensions include password managers and script-management tools, the kind that depend on an instantly responsive popup interface.
1Password and Other Extensions Affected
Many users have already encountered a similar problem. This outlet, for instance, found that after restarting the browser, the first click on 1Password took a long time to load. Attempts to uninstall and reinstall the 1Password extension, or to install certain beta versions of the extension, failed to resolve the long wait before the popup would appear.
Some analysis suggests that Google Chrome may be mistakenly assigning a lower priority to extension-related processes, preventing the popup window from receiving system resources in time. This, however, remains only a theory, since Google is still investigating user reports and has not yet announced a cause or a temporary workaround. PiunikaWeb reported that a fix for the sluggish popups is being tested.
Google Marks the Issue High Priority
After community discussion and user reports, the Google Chrome development team has taken notice of this class of problem and begun investigating. The development team stated in an issue on the Chromium tracker that it would treat the problem as high priority, while also evaluating whether to widen the rollout of related experimental features.
For now, however, Google has neither disclosed the cause of the problem nor offered a temporary workaround. Presumably, Google will resolve the issue thoroughly through a future release, and for the time being, users of Chrome for macOS have no choice but to put up with it.
