Google had previously announced that it would remove all extensions built on the Manifest V2 protocol from the Chrome extension store on 31 August 2026. That cleanup is now complete. As a result, several well-known extensions can no longer be downloaded or installed from the Chrome Web Store.
The Final Step of the MV3 Migration
This purge and delisting represents the final step of Chrome’s migration to the MV3 ecosystem. As early as July 2025, Google had already disabled all legacy extensions. The disabled legacy extensions could not be re-enabled. However, there was a temporary extension of use through enterprise management policy, and that extension policy was subsequently removed by Google as well.
Consequently, from Chrome v138 onward, all extensions based on the legacy protocol ceased to function. Users still running an older version could continue to use them. However, the moment they upgraded to a newer release, the legacy extensions were shut off outright.
Google’s removal of legacy extensions from the store now constitutes the concluding step: users can no longer search for, download, or install any legacy extension through the Chrome Web Store. Some extensions had already ceased updating. In the absence of developer adaptation, users are left with no option but to seek alternative extensions.
Developers Can No Longer Push Updates
Some users, for reasons tied to particular extensions, chose to remain on v138 rather than upgrade. In such cases, already-installed legacy extensions can still be used. Developers simply can no longer publish new versions through the store or push them to users.
If a legacy extension is still maintained by its developer, users must keep an eye on the relevant extension’s website and periodically download and manually install new versions through the extension developer mode. Relying on an old version over the long term, however, carries potential security risks.
