There have long been rumors suggesting that Apple is preparing to launch a more affordable line of MacBook devices, aimed at competing directly with Google’s Chromebooks and other budget-friendly laptops. By offering a lower price point, Apple hopes to expand its ecosystem and attract a broader range of users.
According to the latest report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the upcoming device—codenamed J700—has already entered early production and is expected to launch in 2026, possibly debuting during Apple’s Spring Event that year.
In terms of hardware, this lower-cost model is expected to be a variant of the MacBook Air, featuring a smaller display made from LCD panels instead of the more premium OLED or mini-LED options. This shift is designed to significantly reduce manufacturing costs. The screen size will reportedly be around 12 inches, making it even more compact than the current 13.6-inch MacBook Air.
As for performance, Apple may opt to equip the device with an A-series chip, similar to those used in iPhones and iPads, rather than the M-series chips found in its higher-end Macs. While less powerful, the A-series processors would still deliver sufficient performance for students, office workers, and casual users—while helping keep the device’s price competitive.
With many consumers now relying primarily on smartphones rather than laptops, Apple’s entry-level MacBook Air seeks to capture the market segment of casual users, students, and certain business customers, while also providing an accessible entry point for those who currently do not own a laptop.
Against competitors like Chromebooks and Microsoft’s Surface line, Apple’s new affordable MacBook Air could prove to be a strong contender, likely reinvigorating the budget laptop market and bringing renewed competition to the sector.
