They assigned Claude Fable 5.1, introduced just yesterday, to decrypt the legendary Cyphral Distich. This cryptogram belongs to the renowned Scottish writer Thomas Urquhart. Incredibly, the model discovered a coherent solution in merely 44 minutes. It processed 176,000 tokens entirely without operator guidance.
The Cyphral Distich Enigma
This notorious cipher originally appeared in the 1653 treatise “Logopandecteision.” The puzzle consists of two distinct lines containing 32 numbers each. Scholars have actively debated this problem since at least 1899. Later historians officially included it in a prestigious list of 50 unsolved historical cryptograms. Fable 5.1 systematically evaluated several analytical approaches. The model eventually noticed a direct correlation. It linked the numerical sequences directly to the book’s fundamental structure.
Unlocking the Royalist Message

Subsequently, Fable 5.1 applied this identical principle to the Cyphral Octastich. This significantly larger Urquhart cipher contains 285 numbers. The model utilized numbered pages from another Urquhart book as the decryption key instead of wishes. The AI successfully reconstructed almost the entire text of another royalist prayer. However, nine specific letters remained frustratingly unclear. Researchers attribute this ambiguity to potential typos or errors within the digital copy utilized.
The Need for Independent Verification
Technically, this decryption currently remains a claim presented by Vals AI. The broader cryptographic community must independently verify this discovery. Furthermore, one specific character in the Cyphral Distich depends on interpretation. It hinges on whether the Latin phrase “hinc inde” counts as a single element. A complete, rigorous verification of the second cipher requires physical access to a genuine 1652 edition. The currently available digital scans do not permit accurate verification of the disputed positions.
