Google has announced the release of Veo 3.1, the latest version of its AI video generation model, highlighting significant improvements in prompt adherence and image-to-video conversion capabilities. Veo 3.1 is now available for preview through the Google Gemini API and has been fully integrated into Google’s Flow video editing suite.
Built upon the foundation of Veo 3, introduced earlier this year at Google I/O, the updated model delivers enhanced performance in following user prompts and can more seamlessly transform uploaded image “assets” into videos when combined with textual descriptions. Additionally, Veo 3.1 introduces a new feature enabling simultaneous image-to-video conversion with audio generation — a capability absent in its predecessor.
Within the Flow editor, Veo 3.1 powers a new feature called “Image-to-Video,” which grants users finer control over the video generation process. Users can upload a starting frame and an ending frame, allowing the AI to automatically generate the intermediate footage.
While Adobe Firefly offers a similar functionality, Flow distinguishes itself through its ability to generate synchronized audio, which also extends to the editor’s video extension and object insertion features.
According to Google’s shared samples, videos produced by Veo 3.1 still retain a faintly artificial quality, with results varying significantly depending on the prompts and subject matter. Though its realism may not yet rival OpenAI’s Sora 2, Google’s focus with Veo appears to be on crafting a tool genuinely useful for professional creators and filmmakers, rather than fueling an influx of low-quality social media content.
As AI-driven video generation continues to evolve at a rapid pace, competition among tech giants in this domain grows ever fiercer. With the steady advancement of the Veo model, Google reaffirms its commitment to maintaining a strong foothold in the creative tools market through innovation and refinement.
