Microsoft Defender suite continues to exhibit erratic behavior, with the latest anomaly involving the Smart App Control feature erroneously flagging ASUS Armoury Crate. This “false positive” has rendered the utility inaccessible for a vast multitude of ASUS ROG Ally handheld console enthusiasts.
ASUS Armoury Crate is a quintessential component developed by ASUS to orchestrate various systemic facets, such as refining hardware configurations and modifying system profiles; however, following Microsoft’s intervention, users are currently disenfranchised from these essential controls. The culprit is the Smart App Control mechanism within Microsoft Defender, a security layer engineered to thwart the execution of untrusted applications. Should the system fail to verify a program’s provenance from a reputable source, Smart App Control preemptively obstructs its invocation.
The neutralization of Armoury Crate has paralyzed several hardware-specific functions: the dedicated Armoury and Control Center keys have become unresponsive, while RGB lighting synchronization and thermal fan curves remain unadjustable. The genesis of this conflict appears linked to a recent driver dissemination by ASUS, whose nascent digital signatures Microsoft has seemingly failed to recognize.
Furthermore, Smart App Control lacks a user-managed “allow-list” or exclusion directory; all identification is executed autonomously by Microsoft’s heuristics. Consequently, users are denied the ability to manually authorize Armoury Crate. The only recourse, short of awaiting a resolution from Microsoft, is the total deactivation of the feature.
Discussion regarding this grievance is burgeoning on Reddit, where the consensus suggests that users must endure a period of functional limitation until Microsoft deploys a refined definition update. While disabling Smart App Control remains an option, users must proceed with extreme caution.
It bears repeating: Smart App Control is predicated upon a “Zero Trust” philosophy. Once decommissioned, it cannot be reactivated without a comprehensive reinstallation of the operating system. Therefore, for the sake of systemic integrity, users are urged to await a formal patch from Microsoft rather than permanently disabling this security layer.
