Recently, Microsoft released Windows 11 Beta Build 26120.5722 and Dev Build 26200.5722, introducing a practical new feature: displaying image search results based on local index data.
For instance, when users search for a keyword like “puppy,” a dedicated image section now appears within the search box, presenting images that match the query based on indexed content. Below the image pane, users can also access a Bing search shortcut to continue exploring the keyword online.

In the current version of Windows 11, image-related searches do generate responses, but only as text-based matches without any visual preview. With this update, the inclusion of an image pane offers a more intuitive and visually informative search experience.
It is important to note that this feature does not yet include image content recognition—at least, Microsoft’s blog post makes no mention of such functionality. Therefore, the matching mechanism still relies on file or folder names rather than AI-driven image analysis.
Looking ahead, Microsoft may eventually integrate AI-powered image search capabilities, allowing Copilot AI to analyze image content locally and generate keyword-based indexes. This would enable users to search images based on their actual content, not just file names.
Of course, this remains speculative, as privacy considerations could delay such functionality. Nevertheless, for Copilot+ PCs equipped with dedicated NPUs, enabling AI-based image recognition should not pose a significant technical challenge.
