Microsoft has officially confirmed the upcoming release of Windows 11 version 26H1, which will be available exclusively for select devices. The company’s update cadence now follows an annual cycle, with major releases typically labeled as 2XH2—meaning it has been quite some time since a version bearing the 2XH1 designation was last seen.
This new build, numbered 28000, is currently being distributed through the Windows Insider Canary Preview Channel. For reference, the Dev Channel is now on build 27XXX and the Beta Channel on build 26XXX, so the 28XXX series clearly distinguishes this version from the others.
As anticipated, however, this release is not an upgrade to Windows 11 version 25H2. Instead, it is a specialized build designed exclusively for devices powered by specific chipsets—namely Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 and NVIDIA N1X.
The Snapdragon X2 represents an evolution of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series, while the NVIDIA N1X is a collaborative effort between NVIDIA and MediaTek. Both processors are based on the ARM architecture, and the systems running them will feature the ARM edition of Windows 11. Consequently, Windows 11 version 26H1 is expected to be available solely in its ARM variant.
In its official support announcement, Microsoft clarified:
“26H1 is not a feature update for version 25H2 and only includes platform changes to support specific silicon. There is no action required from customers. 25H2 remains the primary place for new features. Windows 11 continues to have an annual feature update cadence, with releases in the second half of the calendar year. As a reminder, in the Windows Insider Program, new experiences will continue to land first in the Dev and Beta Channels, with Canary primarily focused on platform changes.”
