According to an announcement from Apple, the company intends to release the public beta versions of iOS 26 and other related systems in July 2025. Compared to the developer betas, public betas offer greater stability, albeit with a slightly slower pace in receiving the latest features.
Intriguingly, Apple also plans to launch a public beta firmware specifically for its AirPods—a first for the company. Previously, Apple had not offered public beta firmware for AirPods, suggesting that this update may be substantial enough to warrant broader user feedback.
Last week, Apple released developer beta firmware for both the AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 2. The new firmware enhances call quality and delivers studio-grade audio performance tailored for scenarios such as interviews and podcast recording.
With the installation of this updated firmware, AirPods can also serve as remote controls for the camera. For instance, during tripod-assisted selfies, users can press and hold the stem of the AirPods to trigger photo capture, start or pause video recording, and more. These features are expected to debut in the public beta rollout this July.
The upcoming public beta releases in July include:
- iOS 26 Public Beta
- iPadOS 26 Public Beta
- macOS Tahoe 26 Public Beta
- tvOS 26 Public Beta
- HomePod Software 26 Public Beta
- watchOS 26 Public Beta
- AirPods Public Beta Firmware
