Since its debut in 2023, Google’s AI-powered note-taking tool, NotebookLM, has continued to evolve in both functionality and scope. Most recently, it unveiled a new feature called Featured Notebooks, designed to guide users through thematic content and showcase the platform’s real-world potential, offering a more interactive and in-depth knowledge experience.
This newly added Featured Notebooks section is the result of collaborations between Google and reputable authors, research institutions, media organizations, and nonprofits around the world. Their content has been transformed into interactive notebook examples that demonstrate how NotebookLM merges AI capabilities with expert knowledge to create practical and trustworthy knowledge interfaces.
These curated notebooks are now accessible via a dedicated tab on the NotebookLM homepage. The initial themes include longevity insights (based on Super Agers), annual trend forecasting (drawn from The World Ahead by The Economist), and life advice from The Atlantic’s “How to Build a Better Life” column. Even Shakespeare’s classic works have been reimagined as interactive notebooks, allowing users to explore the texts through conversational AI, AI-generated summaries, audio tours, and concept maps for a multidimensional understanding.
One of NotebookLM’s standout features, compared to single-interface AI tools, is its transparency and verifiability. Users can directly view the original sources referenced by the AI and leverage summaries or visual aids to quickly grasp key ideas—mitigating the risk of AI-generated hallucinations.
Google states that the goal of these Featured Notebooks is not only to demonstrate practical use cases but also to help new users get started quickly, showing how to organize information, build knowledge bases, and engage in dynamic Q&A. The company has also announced plans to expand the number and variety of notebooks, covering more topics and languages, to enrich the cross-platform experience.
Following the introduction of AI-powered audio tours in September 2024, NotebookLM has experienced rapid growth in both user base and public attention. Google has since rolled out a mobile app and public notebook sharing features, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the platform.
Currently, Featured Notebooks are available for desktop users of NotebookLM. Whether the tool will integrate with the Gemini model series or incorporate additional third-party data sources remains an area of keen interest.
