Google’s built-in Password Manager for Android already offers a comprehensive suite of features, including support for TOTP verification codes and passkeys. Now, the company has released it as a standalone application on the Google Play Store.
The Google Password Manager requires users to sign in with their Google account for data synchronization, supporting seamless integration across Android devices and the Chrome browser. It enables users to securely store, edit, generate, and manage their passwords in one place, making the overall experience both convenient and efficient.
As for why it was launched as a separate application, Google explained that the new app essentially provides a shortcut to the Password Manager on Android devices, making it easier for users to locate and manage their saved passwords, keys, and other stored data.
For existing users, the app does not introduce any significant new features, but it does enhance visibility and accessibility by allowing the creation of a direct shortcut on the home screen—enabling quicker access for reviewing and editing credentials.
At present, there is no indication that Google plans to release additional versions of the Password Manager. From a usability standpoint, even if an iOS release is unlikely, extensions for Chromium and Firefox would seem a logical step, allowing users to access their credentials across multiple browsers.
However, it is evident that Google prefers to keep users within the Chrome and Android ecosystems. From this perspective, the company has little incentive to develop dedicated extensions for competing browsers or operating systems.
