The forthcoming macOS 26.2 update, now in testing, introduces a new feature designed to enhance the quality of video calls: the system adds a virtual ring of light around the edges of the display to illuminate the user’s face, significantly improving the image — especially in dimly lit environments.
This capability has already drawn Microsoft’s attention. The company now hopes to bring a similar enhancement to Windows 11, though the feature would rely on PowerToys in combination with the Windows Edge Light utility.
Windows Edge Light is an open-source tool whose primary function is to cast a white, glowing halo around the perimeter of the screen, creating an illuminated border effect. It is particularly suited for improving lighting during video calls or adding ambient effects during streaming.
Microsoft is currently in discussions with the developer of Windows Edge Light, aiming to integrate the feature directly into PowerToys so that users can easily enable a virtual light ring through the PowerToys suite.
It remains unclear whether this integration work has officially begun. For those interested in trying the effect ahead of time, Windows Edge Light can be downloaded and used immediately.
