Microsoft is currently introducing a new feature for Microsoft Teams called “Prevent Screen Capture“. Once enabled, this feature will block screen capture software from taking screenshots during remote meetings, aiming to safeguard sensitive information shared throughout the session.
The concept of disabling screenshots is not new and exists in several instant messaging applications, primarily as a security enhancement. However, software-based screenshot prevention is inherently limited—it can only prevent captures within the platform itself. Users could still photograph the screen with external devices, a loophole that remains difficult to close.
According to the latest entry in the Microsoft 365 roadmap: “To address the issue of unauthorized screen captures during meetings, the Prevent Screen Capture feature ensures that if a user attempts to take a screen capture, the meeting window will turn black, thereby protecting sensitive information.”.
“This feature will be available on Teams desktop applications (both Windows and Mac) and Teams mobile applications (both iOS and Android).”
For users joining meetings from unsupported platforms—such as the web version—if “Prevent Screen Capture“ is enabled, they will automatically be restricted to audio-only mode, with video access disabled. This further mitigates the risk of visual content being illicitly captured.
The feature is expected to roll out globally starting in July 2025. At that time, enterprise IT administrators will have the discretion to enable the feature by default based on organizational needs. If not configured at the administrative level, individual meeting organizers will still have the option to enable it when scheduling a meeting.
