Run iOS 12 beta on iPhone 5S: What will happen?
Apple iOS 12 beta has many new features to attract the attention of fruit powder, including Memoji, FaceTime group calls and improved notifications. But the most significant change is that it can help improve the overall performance of the phone, especially for older devices like the iPhone 5S.
In this year WWDC keynote, Apple released some significant announcements about iOS 12. Take the iPhone 6 Plus as an example: the application starts 40% faster, the keyboard is 50% more quickly, and the camera is 70% faster. In theory, these are tremendous advances. But the iPhone 6 Plus is not the oldest device that can run iOS 12, but the iPhone 5S.
To test the performance of the latest iOS system on the oldest Apple phone, we selected two 16GB iPhone 5S models and restored the factory settings. Then we copied some of the examples in the keynote. One of the iPhone 5S runs the iOS 12 public beta, and the other runs iOS 11.4.
We are not saying that this is a scientific test, but a quick response test of the operating system when performing real-world tasks. Keep in mind that iOS 12 is still in beta and its performance may change until the final release this fall.
The following are the various tasks performed on the iPhone 5S running iOS 12 betas: start mail acceleration 0.25 seconds, start Safari to load CNET web page speed up 3.5 seconds, start map speed has not changed, start camera speed from the lock screen for 0.5 seconds. Start the keyboard in the Message to speed up for 1 second, Siri completes the request to speed up 0.5 seconds.
In the iOS 12 beta, applications such as Safari and Mail are significantly faster to launch, but other apps (including weather, maps) show little difference.
Apple said in a keynote speech that when the system is under load, its share sheet will double its speed. We found that shared tables display much faster than iOS 11 even if no other applications are open. However, this result is not always consistent. After running several times in a row, iOS 11.4 caught up with the performance of the beta.
From the start-up time, the performance of the iOS 12 beta is behind, and iOS 11.4 loads faster. When the final release of iOS 12 is released, we will continue to test its proper performance, so stay tuned.
