Microsoft Releases New Intel Microcode Update (KB4100347) for Windows 10 Build 1803
Security researchers discovered the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities in early January. Microsoft is one of the first companies to distribute patches. In the past few months, Microsoft has released several patches to mitigate reported security vulnerabilities and protect users from these two vulnerabilities. In February of this year, Intel released microcode updates for its OEM partners such as Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake, and Skylake platforms. Microsoft has released firmware updates for Windows 10 version 1709 and above.
Today Microsoft is using the Windows 10 2018 April update (version 1803) to launch Intel firmware updates for all supported devices. It is worth noting that Windows 10 KB4100347 is only shipped to PCs equipped with Intel processors and contains additional mitigation measures for Spectre Variant 2 vulnerabilities. CVE 2017-5715 (Spectre Variant 2) is one of the vulnerabilities found in the Intel CPU and was disclosed earlier this year.
Intel stated that based on these efforts, Intel has now released product microcode updates to OEM customers, partners based on the Kaby Lake and Coffee Lake platforms, and other Skylake-based platforms. According to Microsoft, the update is available via Windows Update. If the user enables automatic updates in the settings, it will be downloaded automatically. Users can also download it from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
